2018 Curiosity + Wonder = The Slow Clothing Movement and Upcycling

To quote the great late Albert Einstein “Curiosity is more important than knowledge”.

In the pursuit of curiosity Parkes Library celebrates authors, books, science, art and creativity in August and September each year.

Social entrepreneur and author Jane Milburn will be visiting Parkes to host a community talk on rethinking the clothing culture.  Jane believes in the magic of remaking and upcycling, and will present two workshops to get people started.

Friday evening: Community Talk – Rethinking Clothing Culture

In an era dominated by passive consumption of cheap and synthetic fashion, Jane presents a compelling case for why we need to change the way we dress to live lightly on Earth through everyday practice. Slow Clothing is a holistic approach to what we wear that considers clothes in the context of health and wellbeing. Jane outlines how slow clothing actions can bring wholeness through living simply, creatively and fairly.

Saturday: Workshop – Transformations from Nature

Experiment with colour using natural materials from your wardrobe, kitchen and garden. Find an unloved natural-fibre garment or two from your wardrobe (or op shop) – wool and silk (work best) or linen and cotton. Using onion skins, tea, leaves, flowers, bark and rusty tools, we refresh and transform them for a second life.

Where: Cooke Park Community Centre

Suitable for beginners. Age 12+. Cost $10. Bookings required with payment at Parkes Library.

Sunday: Workshop – Snip and Stitch Upcycling

Transform your t-shirts and other clothes using scissors and stitching.  Bring along a few unloved natural-fibre garments, options for upcycling them will be explored and changes enacted using hand-stitching techniques or machine sewing (for those with a machine to bring along).

When: 9am-4pm, Sunday 2 September 2018

Some sewing experience preferred. Aged 15+. Cost: $10. Bookings required with payment at Parkes Library.
