End Polio Campaign with ‘Maggie’

For more than 25 years, Rotary International has been leading the fight to END POLIO. It is one of the world’s most ambitious health programs involving many thousands of volunteers and billions of dollars. Polio cannot be considered beaten in any country until there has been three years clear of the virus.

To promote the fundraising, the Rotary Club of Parkes will be touring ‘Maggie’ around the parks and ovals.

Who or what is ‘Maggie’?

If you were born after the 1960s, you mightn’t know that this terrible virus left boys and girls, many under 5 years of age, either severely handicapped, crippled in leg irons, or passed away. Some survived and spent their life in an iron lung which ensured they could breath. It did their breathing for them.

The last remaining iron lung in Australia has been restored and nicknamed Maggie.

Where can I see Maggie?

Maggie’s day will be begin at 9:30am with breakfast at Cooke Park.

From there, she’ll be taken for a tour. You can see her at the following parks and ovals:

♦  11:30am at Spicer Oval

♦  12:30pm at Bushmans Dam (for lunch)

♦  1:30pm at Woodward Park

♦  2:30pm at Keast Park

♦  3:30pm at Cheney Park
